Happy birthday, Vyolette Stella!!

My sweet girl is turning one today! I'll post pictures as soon as Bryan returns from exile in Florida with the two cameras. Trapped there by the storm last week, he's roughing it on the beach at Steve's new house.

Eczema and aromatherapy

As many of you know, Wynter and Lily had/have awful cases of eczema. Testing has shown that lily's allergic to trees and mold while Wynter we suspect is allergic to grass -- so much so that her feet break out in blisters. I make a great black walnut salve that has helped the girls so much, as well as helping other skin conditions on friends and family, that their reactions have diminished enough that Wynter no longer has cracked and blistery feet and has been clear for over two years. My recipe came from some experimentation and research in essential oils, I'm sold on their benefits!

My favorite place to purchase oils is Birch Hill Aromatherapy, visit their recent newsletter to find out more about how oils can help eczema plus other conditions for stress, concentration and better health. Al has been kind enough to answer my questions in the past, these people are great!

Miss Lily turns five *weep*

Between birthday parties and upchuckie cheese, Lily turned five years old on Tuesday! Didn't I just give birth to this monkey five minutes ago?

I somehow joined the ranks at MySpace.com. I blame my friend, Lisa, entirely. She was lost and alone so I joined under the name Lulu Finkelstein so I'd show up on her site and now I'm trapped under that name.

It's not such a bad thing, however. I have made contact with a lot of other writers and after deleting the spammy comments from people I believed were there for good instead of evil, it does keep you in the loop. Who'd have thunk it?

Be a MySpace drone by adding me! http://www.myspace.com/lulufinkelstein

Jazz hands

Oh. Good. Lord.

Who the heck ever said exercise was a good idea? A friend and I went to our first death march, er, Jazzercize class last night to whip our bodies into the teenage shadows we once were. Since between us we've given birth nine times, we had a way to go. It started out nicely, Robin didn't let on that her day job was beating small puppies into submission. Chris and I swayed to the music, giggled at the enthusiasm of the other 20 ladies in the class and then amid pelvic thrusting and jazz hands I broke more of a sweat than I had in years.

Robin's eyes started to glow dark red as she honed in on the newbies and head spun around as she sashayed into a corner and hop-skipped into the next. Chris was doing admirably; I shook my butt and wished for death. My non-skid sensible shoes flew across the floor while my jiggly arms struggled to mimic the movements of the seventy year old woman in front of me, her pink sneakers mocking as she kicked higher than anyone else.

Water break! We scurried to the far corners of the room in search of our bottles, unearthed from under the car seats on the way there or fresh from the fridge. I, naturally, left mine in the car so had to stand in line at the fountain behind sweaty women who had also neglected to lock and load the bottle.

Robin, dewy - never sweaty - called us back, her body bouncing from excitement and flipping her blonde hair back over her shoulders. A huge smile on her face, I knew she was up to no good; another 30 minutes of posing, skipping and thrusting and I was ready to crawl back to the car but she cheerfully called out for weights. Chris and I feigned ignorance that we should have brought hand thingys, we haul around babies all day long, doesn't that count? So we pushed the air and watched the others suffer. I still have burn marks from the eyes boring into my back by my death campmates.

An hour later and at least one pulled muscle, I feel, if not tone and trim yet, body parts that had the crap scared out of them that I'll go again.

Zombies in the cheese dip

YAY zombies!

I belong to an excellent writers' forum -- Absolute Write (link on the title for more information) and am pleased as a chicken in springtime to have won the February Freelance Assignment contest! My winning article was entitled Zombies in the cheese dip and gave tips on how to tell the perfect summer ghost story. =D

One of these days I'll have to suck it up and learn how to submit something, perhaps this will get me in the big leagues!

Duties

Three men were sitting together, bragging about how they had given their new wives duties.

The first man had married a woman from Indiana , and bragged that he had told his wife she was going to do all the dishes and house cleaning that needed done at their house. He said that it took a couple days, but on the third day he came home to a clean house, and the dishes were all washed and put away.

The second man had married a woman from Utah He bragged that he had given his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, the dishes, and the cooking. He told them that the first day he didn't see any results, but the next day it was better. By the third day, his house was clean, the
dishes were done, and he had a huge dinner on the table.

The third had married an Oregon girl. He said that he told her that her duties were to keep the house clean, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything, but by the third day most of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, just enough to fix himself a bite to eat, load the dishwasher, and telephone a landscaper.

Gotta love those Oregon girls!

Hide the coffee table and suck up the carpet crumbs!

To her surprise, Vyolette has begun to crawl! I'm an old hand at this now so we've moved the coffee table and are searching for the stair gates. She woke up last night yelling her head off because she'd sat herself up and couldn't lay back down. *sigh*

Tis the season to return gifts

Naaaaah, I never return anything. It's the hoarder in me or my plain abhorrence of anything that resembles bad manners. I will hold onto that 8-track tape deck until the day I die. Or until Bryan pitches it when I'm not looking.

Wynter and I went coat shopping on the 26th of all days. I expected long lines and deeply slashed prices, I found long lines alright but only at the coffee kiosks at the mall. The stores were pretty empty, I'm sure because of their dismal sales. It's not as if they weren't trying to pull you in with their "buy one now and pay for it many many times over with 27% APR store credit" sale. Can you feel the excitement in the air? Me neither. Wyn and I finally did find a coat that wasn't insanely priced and actually fit. Now we'll find out if she can keep out of trees long enough to not rip the puffy blue material or snag it on something as she drags it behind her from the bus stop. I'm not holding my breath.

Have a lovely New Year!

Urban Botanic

Shew. You know how I love smelly things, well this company has me under its spell already and the concept is intoxicating! Urban Botanic takes the home party to a new level, helping women create their personal scent to add to lotion, parfume spray, and bath items. How fun is that?

I'm waiting to hear back about having a party here and perhaps saving up for their hefty consultant fee of $500. Eh, if nothing else, I'll smell fabulous!

Fool on the Hill update

It's getting closer! Meh- I've been saying that for three years now... ;)

We're having the house re-wrapped and sided, soon the stonework, ductwork and actual walls will be in (aim high...)!

Wee Ghostie stories

Check out the newest stories at Wee Ghosties, I have another one entered in a contest right now at Dark Recesses Press. If it flops, perhaps you'll see it in the blog!
Wish me luck!

Online parties

Whoooo! I had a lot of fun at that party! I love it when people get into bidding wars during auction parties, they're having fun and I get to shake my bad thing and let them go crazy. I've been asked to write an ebook on how to do online parties, I'm also considering becoming a chat hostess for hire for those who would feel more comfortable with back up or they'd like me to run the thing while they get the orders for their company! It's alllll good, baby. Check back for status on the ebook!

Bath and Body Recipes

As many of you already know, I've been fiddling with making my own bath and body things for a long time. I love giving them as gifts and even started my own business with salves and herbal pillows. I wanted to share some recipes online for others to get started so will be putting one up daily. There's also an ebook available (not my recipes) for download. Let's get crackin' on Christmas presents!!

Daily Slow Cooker Recipes

I'm a slow cooker nut! I love doing this for the family, it's quick, simple and everyone enjoys a hot meal. I started a blog with slow cooker recipes, one will be posted a day or you can download the ebook with over 450 recipes! Come check out what's in the crockpot today!

Slow Cooker pot roast

I looooove my pot roast! Probably the yummiest dinner I make, this is now a Sunday night staple. Enjoy!

1 - 2 to 3 lb beef chuck pot roast
3/4 cup water
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 beef bouillon cube
2 tablespoon dried garlic
2 tablespoon dried onion
pepper

Put roast in slow cooker, no need to sear since it's going to be in the pot all day anyway. Combine other ingredients with the water and pour over the roast. Pop on the lid and cook on low for 10-12 hours or 6-8 on high.

Gravy - pour roast drippings from slow cooker into skillet and add 2 tablespoons of flour to thicken over medium heat. Stir with whisk until it boils and the flour blobs are mixed in. Stir and cook for 1-2 minutes more.

Easy roast potatoes - Quarter red potatoes lengthwise and put in a ziploc. Add a few tablespoons of oil, throw in some salt, pepper, dried onion and garlic and shake. Spread evenly on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 45-60 minutes.

Toofers

OW! Vyolette announced her foray into the world o'teeth by biting Syenna. Hey, at least it wasn't me... ;) The day before she uttered the words every parent wants to hear -- "trust fund". Oh wait, that was Robin Williams, not Vyolette. She said "MMAMAMAMAAMAMAMAM" drool "MAMAMAMAMAMMAMA" drool.

Pictures are forthcoming as soon as there's more to see than Syen's bloody finger.

Wynter Moon

It occurred to me that there is a lack of pictures of the real Wynter Moon. She's usually the one taking the pictures of the family or making movies of herself and singing in the bathroom.

She has the biggest heart and the biggest smile, a hug for everyone and a great sister!

9.29.2006

Baby goo.

Vyolette is flinging herself all over the living room lately. Well, perhaps "flinging" is too enthusiastic a word but rolling herself under couches doesn't sound as dramatic. It's time to see what the updates in baby security systems are, maybe a big dog that blocks the staircase would work, then he puts her gently back in the exersaucer. I am way too old for this~ ;)

The Variety Show

Ahhhh, I love new obsessions. I've joined a friend in her podcasting venture! I'm hosting and producing the Variety Show, part of the Virtual Brown Bag at Agent Retriever for the real estate community. I get all the fun stuff, things that tweak our interest and think you may enjoy, everything from organizing your business day to singing grammar lessons. I'm having a great time learning how to snap those audio files to my will -- muahahahahaaha.

A new show is on every Thursday, 12p at http://roundtable.agentretriever.com , directions for downloading the podcast to listen on your iPod or on your computer (launches automatically) are listed on the site. Come and hear the smooth sound stylings o'stacey~~~

Get this kid an agent!

Syen is taking over my kitchen! She made dinner last night, she's perfecting her recipes to get ready for the Rachael Ray Kid Cook contest. She's already planning her kitchen appliances, what the heck is she going to do with a deep fryer, I don't even let her turn on the stove!

8.29.2006

She sees dead people...

If you've been reading this blog for a while or just flat out know me, you know I've been running around with the ghosties for nearly 20 years. A friend and very talented medium, Barb Mallon, is hosting a great Halloween event locally, in Chantilly, Virginia, Halloween night. Having been to three of her past sessions and taking her workshops I can tell you she's right on the money and a kick in the butt to know.

We've done investigations together and her insight has been key to following up on the data the team picks up by more scientific means. If we're the heart, she's definitely the soul of our work.

Visit her website today for more information on this event and others-

Drama free tarot

Alrighty, part of my transitional phase is to dust off my tarot cards and take a peek at the future. A friend just called to ask me what lay in store for his romantic future, why not pass along the same to others? Visit my blog at http://dramafreetarot.blogspot.com and see what you can learn about yourself today. It ain't magic, it's maaaaaaagick ;)

Winds of change

Ahhhhh, the winds are a'blowin. I see the last half of this year as a transitional phase for us. I'm starting a new writing class to get back to what some say are natural talents that have been sitting dusty on a shelf for too long. Bryan is wrapping up building the house and looking towards Seattle and new ideas. Rowyn starts middle school next month (YIKES) and Vyolette just flipped herself over, turtle no more.

7.26.2006

NASCAR and my ADD.

Adult ADD is a funny thing. Bryan swears I have it, I think I'm just a master of multi-tasking. Neither of us can stand to not be busy (ergo the five children). What I'm learning as I age is how to shift gears, what's important and what can wait. The kids are important (gear one), Bryan's important (gear two), business is important for my own sense of self (gear three but can idle). I'm learning to balance the times I need to rev up and perform with the idle; this before I blow out a hemi.

Ok. I don't really know what a hemi is but it's apparently important to the NASCAR generation on TV. Having never seen a NASCAR race all the way through (people actually sit through those things) I can't understand the appeal. I blame the ADD. At least it can't be as bad as hockey.

Buffs -- the sequel

well that was fun, had to put in a few more photos!

Where the buffalo roam

What a crazy week! We flew to Montana for my family reunion, who knew I was related to half of Missoula?

The girls had an amazing time fishing, kayaking, swimming, horseback riding, rolling in chicken poo, fighting off mutant mosquitos, dodging fireworks from my pyro father and brother, wrestling with cousins and chasing buffalo at the National Bison Range. And that was in the first few days. A big thank you to Brad and Stephanie for hosting the 'do, I'll be sending the girls back for summer camp next year... ;)

Basic Mineral Makeup

Ok people, I have HAD it with gooey liquid makeup! I'm not big on makeup anyway but do wear foundation, the summers always led to uneven sweaty makeup that stuck in the wrong places or simply wore off. I tried mineral makeup ages ago and loved it but the cost was prohibitive so stopped buying it. Recently I had an opportunity to join a business that sold mineral makeup at a great price and I could join as a consultant, unfortunately the owner had medical problems and had to sell the business so instead of being a sheep and following, a friend of mine and I decided to take this bull by the horns and start our own company!

Basic Mineral Makeup will launch August 1, 2006! Affordable, adaptable to your lifestyle (no touchups needed) and a snap to apply, Basic Mineral Makeup gives you the silky fresh feel of powder. Created from Earth's minerals, it contains a natural sunscreen, has no additives to make you itch, no talc or fragrance and is easily mixable with other minerals to match your perfect shade. The minerals help smooth out the roughness and redness left from rosacea and acne giving you younger looking skin and a healthy glow.

We're looking for consultants! 25% commission, 25% off personal sales, 5% downline commissions, a free website, free training and graphics plus more!

Come visit me at Basic Mineral Makeup http://basicmineralmakeup.com to get started on your unique beauty!

It's raining Vyolettes

Well the rain rain rain came down down down--

It's a lovely Oregonian day today, very fitting for Earth Day to be replenished by much needed rain us here in Virginia. Bryan and I sat in the kitchen tonight with the door open to the deck, listening to the patter of rain and taking in the sweet earth smells as they rose up to meet us. We were instantly homesick for Oregon and I'm plotting on how to get us back home--

The girls started the spring season of softball last week! Wynter and Syenna are on the same team and very enthusiastic, Lily thinks she too should be allowed to play so she brings her giant orange plastic bat and watches from the fence outside the diamond, waiting for the coach to send her in--

Ma Belle Vyolette

Five days late and as big as a minute, Miss Vyolette Stella Graham burst into the world on March 18th at 3:23am. 6lbs, 7oz and 20" long!

We're since home and getting into the bleary-eyed merry-go-round of baby love. She's up to 6lbs, 10oz today after dropping to 6lbs, 3oz after birth -- that kid can eat!!

3.05.2006

No baby news yet!

Ohhhhh, the wait.

Aside from a crib (coming), I think we've got everything set up for the newbie. You'd think it would be all done from memory by now but it's been four long years since the last toe tickler came through the door. Lily's fourth birthday is tomorrow! Unfortunately, she's back in the pneumonia saddle again so we're celebrating quietly while she checks out the new stroller and sucks down meds from the nebulizer. =)

I'll keep you posted on cervical developments!

1.16.2006

we don't need no water let the.....

Finally a winter coat for the poor house! Bryan's been working like a wildman to get us into the house before the baby comes, I think he just wants to show off ;)

panda baby

While Lily sits here on my lap, singing "Santa Claus is coming to town" (in January), she wanted me to share with y'all the wee panda cub we went to visit at the National Zoo in Washington, DC yesterday.

"We saw him at the zoo today, we saw her at the zoo. He looked like a panda and he had a daddy panda and a mama panda. And he had elephants, monkey and hippo friends but no cats. The pandas today there was lots of playing, the mama panda kissed the baby panda! That's so cuuuuuuuuuuuute! Pandas love to plaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!"

And on a last note, "You better be bad or good, you better be good for goodness sakes! God bless America!"

Graham Crackers

When will I remember what happens when the glow of "let's have another baby" wears off? My feet hurt, my back aches and my boobs? Good lord.

Send cookies. I need backup...

Deck the halls...

Ok, lame christmas reference but it just seems so fitting...

What's 19 feet of decking between friends?

This week has been fraught with hacking and wheezing. Lily contracted pneumonia last Monday night so between her meds and my wheezing bronchitis, we've managed to dominate the pharmacy and get our own wing named after us. We're so proud.

9.09.2005

The Iron Butt

Well Bryan's been put back together with gluesticks and is now the proud owner of a shiny new butt. Instead of a full hip replacement, he had a "resurfacing" done, the top of the femur is ground down (ew) and a metal cap is popped on top; a metal shell is then placed in the hip socket so they slide around easily and not ground the bone on bone like before. He's already itching to come home (after surgery two days ago) and will return from South Carolina tomorrow. He says there's only post-surgery soreness and the hip feels great, so cross your fingers he doesn't get thrown to the ground for setting off metal detectors tomorrow!

8.26.2005

do do do do doooooooooo

Anyone else hearing the theme music to Alien? The girls went with me yesterday to Wormie's latest appointment and waved at the wee blob on the screen who kicked its legs and twirled for its sisters.

Meanwhile, school starts on Monday! We took the girls on a surprise 3-day trip to Kings Dominion and Monticello earlier this week, the looooooooongest ice cream run ever. ;) They had a great time and we wrapped up the summer nicely before Bryan heads for his latest hip surgery on September 7th.

8.19.2005

WHY can't I craft?

I swear it's the bane of my existence. I'm surrounded by very crafty people, you'd think it would have rubbed off on me at least a wee bit. I am mess at Modge Podge, will invariably paint myself some odd color before leaving the house and have a craft closet stuffed to the gills with failed attempts at whatever the craft of the minute was. I think that's why I started graphics, at least then I could blame the computer. ;)

I'm going to crackling soon, talk me out of it now. All of a sudden I feel the need to having peeling paint all over the house. It's not particularly attractive but I feel that if I master the art of the subtle peel, I'll be accepted into the crafting fold and will be able to nod knowingly at the lowly masses that cannot mix glue and paint together and come up with this crap. I haven't decided exactly what to subject this torture too, the kids are too fast after that whole "curtain" incident and I don't have the money to ruin furniture at will. Hmmmmm, Bryan has some silly things he never uses in the basement.... muahahahahaahha

Stay tuned.

Ghost stories --- oooooooh

As some of you know, I've been ghosthunting for nearly 20 years. It started with a research paper in college and evolved into a mini-obsession to see if I could wrap my mind around things I have no control over. I focus on the science of the phenomenon instead of slapping a jewel to my forehead and channeling Elvis (though that would ROCK) but I'm open to all new experiences. I started writing for The Shadowlands (http://theshadowlands.net) years ago but gave it up recently to focus on other things. Below is one of my past articles from their newsletter:
---------------------

Beyond the Pale
Copyright 2005 Stacey Graham

Ghost hunters are a funny breed. What makes us sit alone in a closet for an hour hoping for something to pop out? What are we waiting for? Floating heads?

You’d be surprised to learn that most of us didn’t feast on Friday the 13th movies while growing up, that many had experiences in childhood that they just couldn’t explain and it’s followed them into the twilight of adulthood. Many of you are familiar with Dave Juliano’s experience growing up in a haunted house, here’s an experience that started me on the path to sitting in that closet.

One of my early experiences with the paranormal came from visiting a ghost town in the northwestern USA while on vacation. Now, you’d expect a ghost town to come with the prerequisite residual hauntings or at least a spooky outhouse. This town of Garnet, Montana had its share of rundown buildings as it nestled in a wee valley in the mountains. A gold mining town, it once held the riches of the mountain in its palm and miners flocked to pluck it from between the fingers of the hillside. It grew fat and rich for a time but when the gold ran out, so did the miners. Leaving behind a hotel, a general store, small houses and large pockets dug into the nearby hills (plus the aforementioned spooky outhouses).

My family wandered through what was left of the town, along with other curious tourists, trying to get a sense of what it was like in its heyday. Imagining dirty, desperate men coming from inside a mountain wasn’t difficult, what remained of their cabins told the story better than any signage the BLM had provided. Ruined furniture, rusted pans left scattered about filthy cabins and the feeling of failure permeated the broken walls of the houses, why wouldn’t there be a haunting? It seemed as if that was all there ever was here.

I entered the hotel slowly. Once there was grandeur of sorts, now it looked like a woman ruined by too many men and not enough self-respect. Plaster flaked from the walls and heavy tables stood in the middle of the first floor dining room, looking strangely proud of weathering time and being able to show off their wounds left by drunken gunshots and the flying glass of old arguments. I followed my family upstairs to see the rooms. They were partitioned off by Plexiglas so you could peer inside but not enter. In some of the rooms, the windows were left bare, sunshine squeaked in through the dirty glass and fell onto beds salvaged from the hotel and covered with old quilts. In others, the windows were covered, dusty light shone through the boards that swallowed the glass. These rooms held what seemed to be 100-year-old garbage. It covered the floors and rose up the walls, it smelled like decay and made you want to turn away. I, naturally, couldn’t.

As I got closer, my heart started to beat louder in my ears and my nose started to twitch. I felt lightheaded and wanted to run. I poked my head into the room and at once felt something rushing towards me. I am not particularly psychic, just enough to know when to get the heck out of a place! If I could describe it, I’d say it was pain, screaming and confusion coming at me all at once. I backed away quickly and my investigational gene kicked in. I checked out the other rooms to see if I experienced any similar occurrences and casually asked my husband if he had seen anything out of the ordinary. This man is as intuitive as a brick. “Nothing that a dustbuster couldn’t help…” he replied.

I knew what I had felt was unusual; I tested it again before we left the building. Again, my heart raced and my nose tingled but this time there was no attack of emotion towards me. I could feel that it sat huddled in the corner, amidst the rubbish and filth, and watched as I moved out of sight and down the stairs, escaping into the light.
